BBC Classical Music, Noise and Hearing

On the 19th July 2010 we have ben invited to the BBC seminar on Classical Music, Noise and Hearing. This event has been organised to conjunction with the BBC Proms and will be held at the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House.

MSc student awarded Concert Hall scholarship

Masters student John Zeman has been invited to attend the CHRG Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico, July 25-29, 2010. He was also awarded a full scholarship, $1500. Well done John!

Goto Meeting Webinar - The Future?

On the evening of the 12th May 2010 at London South Bank University the combined forces of the IMechE / CIBSE / ASHRAE group gave the first virtual seminar using Goto Meeting. Three international presentations were given - Dubai, Chicago and from India. So, some people stayed up late. Is this the start of the Virtual University?

Peter Mapp gives a Guest Lecture

On the 10th May 2010 Peter Mapp gave a guest lecture to the Masters students in Acoustics on most aspects of speech intelligibility. Peter also demonstrated some practical issue when trying to take STIPA measurements. Finally, he gave his thoughts on the future direction of intelligibility. The talk was appreciated by one and all!

Anne Kyyro Quinn Beautiful Acoustic Panels

On 12th May 2010 two newly designed Anne Kyyro Quinn decorative panels were tested in the Acoustics Laboratory. The absorption characteristics were derived from reverberation time measurements, then they were admired!

Extreme Certification Testing of the SoundBadge

On 11th May 2010 the new Audio3 SoundBadge personal sound dosimeter was tested at the Acoustics Laboratory. This involved extremely high noise levels - 120 dBA, well it did until the loudspeaker started smoking!

Prototype SoundBadge Undergoes Certification

On the 7th May 2010 the Audio3 SoundBadge underwent certification testing to establish compliance with IEC 61252 Specification for personal sound exposure meters. Please forgive the cellotape!

Georgia Zepidou presents at Ghent University

On the 29th April 2010 Georgia Zepidou presented her work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra during the Institute of Acoustics Spring Conference at Ghent University. The paper was entitled, "An orchestras' noise exposure". Well done George, a very relaxed style!

Steve Dance presents at Ghent University


Dr Stephen Dance presented two papers at the joint Institute of Acoustics/Belgium Acoustical Society Conference held at Ghent University. The papers were entitled, "Advanced in rooftop wind turbines and their installation" and "A longitudinal study of hearing loss amongst classical musicians".

MSc student Nick Durup presents in Belgium

On the 29th April 2010 Nick Durup, a Masters student from the Sharpsredmore Consultancy, presented his MSc dissertation at the IoA conference in Belgium. The paper was entitled, "Acoustics modelling and testing of a music rehearsal facility". The session was entitled Acoustics of Interior Spaces and chaired by Prof Bridget Shield. Well done Nick!

Acoustics uses for the iPhone by MSc student John Zeman

On the 30th April 2010 John Zeman gave his presentation at the Institute of Acoustics Spring Conference at Ghent University. The research was undertaken by the Masters students as part of their course. The paper was entitled, "Acoustic uses for the iPhone". This was given as part of Measurement of Noise session chaired by Dr Stephen Dance. Well done on an excellent presentation John!

Rob Connetta Ghent Presentation

Rob Connetta, an EPSRC Research Fellow, gave his pilot results during his presentation. The paper was entitled, "A preliminary survey of noise levels in UK secondary schools"

16 LSBU Acousticians at Joint Anglo-Belgium Conference

On the 28/30th April 2010 the Institute of Acoustics and Belgium Acoustical Society held a joint conference at the Het Pand of Gent University. The conference was proposed by Prof Bridget Shield, the VP for International Relations at the Institute of Acoustics. The Acoustics Group presented 6 papers, 2 by Masters students - all were well received. I hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed the banquet in the Castle!
