Tubitak meeting in Istanbul


Steve was in Istanbul for 24-27 May 2012 for the Turkey. At the invitation of Tubitak Steve presented his ideas successfully to the Fraunhofer Institute and to an Estonia company.He was very happy to see his old Masters students, Ozge Can and Demir Doken.

Royal Academy of Music Audiometry Re-Tests

On the 11th May 2012, the second set of exit audiometric tests for the Royal Academy of Music were completed. Those students identified as at risk from 2008/9 were retested. Then Steve had to run to catch a plane to Hong Kong!!!

MSc student presents at Acoustics 2012

On the 18th May 2012, former Master student Chris McNeillie presented his MSc dissertation at Acoustics 2012 in Hong Kong. The paper was entitled, "Background Noise Level in a Mining Township - A Case Study". Chris is now with SLR Heggies in Queensland, Australia - lucky guy!

New Class 1 Microphone from China

On the 15th May 2012, the last exhibition day of the America/China Acoustics 2012, at Hong Kong International Conference Centre Steve had a plan! As the exhibitors were packing away, Steve did a deal using the last of his HK$ for a class 1 microphone capsule from Hangzhou Aihua. Now it needs to be tested against a B&K equivalent :)

Acoustical Society of America Mentor Award

On the 14th May 2012 Steve got his last chance to be a student! He was snuck into the Student Reception by the ASA President Mardi Hastings- the security was tight! The ASA Student Council Mentoring Award was presented by Matt Shaw reading a very kind citation written by former Masters student Jonh Zeman. Thanks to all my students from 2009/10 for their suppport - Hong Kong was fun!

Steve presents at Hong Kong Conference

On the 14th May 2012, Dr Stephen Dance presented his paper, "Improving the acoustical environment for classical musicians", to the joint 163rd meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the Acoustical Society of China. This paper was formed from two Masters dissertations by Alba Losada and Sarah Large. This was the first joint America/China meeting and it went really well in Hong Kong - but don't drink the tap water!

EU/Turkish Research Forum

On the 11th May 2012, Tubitak - the Turkish Research Agency, invited Dr Stephen Dance to Istanbul to participate in TurKey Enabling Technologies. Steve will be in Istanbul from 24-27th May 2012 to pitch some ideas to EU/Tubitak regarding the SoundBadge, and Earthquake proofing buildings and the iCloud.

Tamara receives RBA-Acoustics Prize




Tamara Potaz, a student at London South Bank University, has been awarded the 2012 RBA Acoustics prize for the best dissertation. The prize, which is awarded for, "Excellence in the Study of Acoustics and its Application to Real world Problems", was presented to Tamara on the 26th April 2012. Her Masters dissertation was entitled "Something (Not) to Short About: An evaluation of the implementation of the City of Buenos Aires’ acoustic pollution legislation and the measures applied to mitigate it".  Russell Richardson of RBA Acoustics commented that, "a highly deserving winner from a highly competitive year". He added, "it was interesting to read how another cosmopolitan city deals with noise issues".

Students working with the London Philharmonic

On the 1st May 2012, the MSc students listened to the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Henry Wood Hall. On-going subjective testing was undertaken with the aim of improving the environment for the musicians. Next the Royal Festival Hall!
